A Subscription Service for Beards
A case study spanning from inception into a Multi-Million Dollar Company
Slightly less than two years ago, Stoikos and the DBC team starred in a video inspired by a viral hit. Frame by frame, they parodied the famous introductory video that vaulted Dollar Shave Club into the public consciousness in 2012, and later to a $1 billion sale. While Dollar Shave Club catered to the clean-shaven men, shipping them razors for $1 per month, DBC rallied their bristly counterparts, promising a monthly supply of beard oil for the same dollar via a new company called the Dollar Beard Club.
Dollar Beard Club came to us after their Shopify prototype subscription site didn’t meet the cut. They outlined their goals and needs of creating a subscription based website that sells men’s grooming products. Heck, they even moved their entire operations 3 miles from our headquarters to be closer to our team. The site needed to be able to handle tens of thousands of users on a concurrent connection. Utilizing some of our latest and greatest technology (at the time), we created DBC a subscription based box service using our Humpback framework.
With a parody commercial ready to go, having a working subscription website was vital to success.
Once a Prototype was created, a social media campaign was implemented to begin building traction before launch.
30k subscribers the first month of launch, with over 1 million youtube views.
Just a few months after launch, DBC was grossing over $1million a month in recurring revenue.
As passionate as we are about web projects, this was one of the really cool ones that crossed our desk, and it just so happen that some of us have beards too. Utilizing our platform framework Humpback we created DBC, which allowed us to rapidly scale Dollar Beard Club in their extremely short deadlines. Dollar Beard Club’s growth was one to push the limits of our Humpback Framework, a true battle tested accolade for one of our experiments.
